There’s something so appealing about a perfectly chiseled bad boy who can rock it out on a violin. Yes, we’re talking about David Garrett: the German violin prodigy who began playing the instrument at age four, got signed to a label at 13, and subsequently fled to New York in search of a world void of classical music. The rebellious fleeing introduced him instead to a life of rock music and clubbing, busboying and modeling (in the pages of Vogue), and finally to the realization that violin wasn’t something that could easily be abandoned. Garrett studied under the legendary Itzhak Perlman at The Juilliard School and subsequently carried out a mission to make classical music more appealing to a younger demographic. In 2009, he was listed as the best-selling new classical artist of the year and his album spent well over 40 weeks on the Top 10 chart, including a 9-week run at the top spot. His latest album, Rock Symphonies, is an almost-perfect marriage of the two seemingly disparate worlds of rock and classical music – a David Garrett love letter to rock bands like Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses, and U2. Love, rock, violin, and chiseled jawbones – it’s a 2010 mashup we can certainly endorse.
